Clacton by-election, 2014

UKIP gain from Conservative

A by-election was held for the Clacton constituency on 9 October 2014 following the resignation of UKIP MP Douglas Carswell, after defecting from the Conservatives.

Carswell stood again under his new UKIP colours, while the Conservatives fielded local councillor and actor Giles Watling. Labour selected Colchester councillor Tim Young, the Liberal Democrats stood children's writer and professional actor Andy Graham, and the Greens chose local perennial candidate Chris Southall.

The Offical Monster Raving Loony Party leader Alan "Howling Loud" Hope contested the by-election as well, along with two independents - "high class courtesan" Charlotte Rose, and consultant oncologist Dr Bruce Sizer.

Douglas Carswell gained the seat for UKIP.
